Desert dust gets into every Scottsdale home

Scottsdale's a long, narrow city, and the houses change as you head north. South Scottsdale and the streets around Old Town have older ranch homes, often block or brick, with sliding glass doors onto the yard. McCormick Ranch has planned neighborhoods built around its lakes. Farther north, in places like DC Ranch and Troon, the homes get bigger, with stucco walls and wide windows facing the mountains. They all sit in the same desert.

The desert puts a fine dust in the air. It's fine enough to get past closed windows, and it settles on ceiling fan blades and the tops of door frames. It packs into sliding door tracks too. Air conditioning runs for much of the year here, which keeps that dust moving through the house until it builds up on every vent and return grille. A room can look clean at eye level and still have a gray film on everything above your head.

Monsoon season makes it worse. Summer storms can push a wall of dust across the Valley, and it blows in under doors and through any gap around a window. Scottsdale tap water leaves white scale behind
