Desert dust gets into every Gilbert house

Gilbert grew from a farm town into a big suburb in a short stretch of time. Most of the houses went up in master-planned neighborhoods, from Val Vista Lakes in the north to Power Ranch in the southeast. Inside, a lot of them are built the same way. Tile floors run through the main rooms, and a ceiling fan turns in nearly every bedroom. That layout's easy to live in. It also shows dust faster than you'd think.

Summer's the hard part. Monsoon storms push walls of dust across the East Valley, and fine grit gets in around doors and windows even when the house is shut. The air conditioning runs for months at a time, so it keeps moving that dust around the house. It settles on fan blades and along baseboards. Leave it for a season and it turns into a gray film that a dry duster only spreads around.

So a clean in Gilbert starts high and works down. We wipe fan blades and the tops of door frames early, because anything knocked loose up there lands on the tile below. Gilbert tap water leaves a white film

Water in Gilbert is hard, like it is across the Valley. It carries a lot of dissolved minerals, and when it dries it leaves them behind. You'll see it as white spots on shower glass and a chalky ring around the base of a faucet. In the kitchen it builds up around the sink drain and on the edge of the faucet head. Wipe it early and it comes right off. Let it sit for months? It hardens into a crust.

Glass shower doors take the worst of it. Every shower leaves a thin coat of drops, and the minerals stay when the water dries. Over time the spots overlap into a haze, and the glass won't look clear even right after a wipe. Left long enough, it can etch the glass for good. The same buildup collects in the grout lines of tile showers and along the rim of the tub.

On a standard clean we wipe down fixtures and glass so the spots have less chance to build. On a deep clean we put real time into the buildup that's already there, on shower glass and around the base of each faucet. If a mark's gone past what cleaning can fix, we'll tell you. Etched glass is damaged, and scrubbing won't bring it back. Better to hear that before the visit than after.
