Older Mesa ranch homes need detail work

Much of central and west Mesa is made up of single-story ranch homes built from block and finished in stucco. Many went up between the seventies and the nineties. They are solid houses, and plenty of them have a ceiling fan in nearly every room. They also hold years of built-up dust where a quick wipe never reaches, like the tops of door frames and the sliding door track.

Left alone, that dust does not stay put. Every time the fans spin or the air conditioning runs, dust on the blades and vent covers blows back into the room. It settles on the furniture you just wiped. Grout that has turned dark holds grease and dirt that a mop only spreads around. So on a first visit to an older Mesa home, we start at the ceiling and work down. The floors come last, once the dust from above has landed on them.

East Mesa is a different job. The newer neighborhoods that stretch out toward the Superstition Mountains have high ceilings and tall windows, and tile runs through most of the house. Those high ceilings come with ledges and fans nobody can reach from the floor, so dust sits up there for months. Big windows show every smudge in the afternoon sun. We get up to those high spots, and we treat the tile and grout as their own job instead of giving the floor a quick mop.

We clean up after monsoon dust storms

Every summer the monsoon sends walls of dust across the Valley, and Mesa gets its share. The dust is fine enough to slip through the gaps around doors and windows even with the house shut tight. The day after a storm you find a gray film on every window sill and a line of grit in the sliding door tracks. Summer heat keeps the house closed up and the air conditioning running, so that dust just keeps moving around inside.

Desert dust is gritty, and grit scratches. Wiping a dusty glass table or a dark counter with a dry cloth drags it across the surface. After a storm we vacuum the tracks and sills first. Then we clean glass and hard surfaces with a damp cloth that lifts the dust instead of pushing it around. Blinds and ceiling fans get wiped down too, because that is where the dust lands and then drops again the next time the air moves.

The water is the other problem. Mesa's tap water is hard, like the rest of the Valley, and it leaves white mineral spots wherever it dries. Shower glass turns cloudy and faucets build a crust around the base. Regular soap barely touches it. Scale needs a cleaner made to break it down, and time to let that cleaner work before anyone scrubs. On a regular visit we keep it from building up. On a deep clean we take off what has already set in.
